Jeff Bezos And Fiancée Lauren Sánchez Are Under Fire Before Their Wedding

American businessman and billionaire, who is believed to be the founder, executive chairman and former president and C.E.O of Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce and cloud computing company – Jeff Bezos, is expected to wed his fiancee, Lauren Sanchez. The wedding is expected take place on an island in the city of Venice known as Giorgio Maggiore from Monday until Thursday. But a certain activists group which has named itself “No Space For Bezos”, is against the wedding.

They believe Mr Bezos is using their historic city as a playground for rich people activities, and this is quickly changing the city into a destination which only accomodates the ultra rich. One of the activist group leader, Federica Toninelli says the city is being privatized by the rich. She says Mr Bezos is is treating the entire city like his private ballroom and neglecting the locals like they don’t exist.

The city houses a population of about 50,000 people, and it has been facing a challenge of overtourism. The city leadership tried introducing tourist fees and restrictions, in order to reduce the number of tourists. It receives over 5 million tourists annually, and for this reason, the cost of living has kept on rising, thereby making it difficult for locals to find affordable housing within the city.

Despite the protests, City Mayor – Luigi Brugnaro, says it is an honor to host the wedding and he has dismissed the protests stating that it is the work of a vocal minority. The famous luxurious wedding is expected to host some important attendees like Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, Katy Perry and of course, Donald Trump’s daughter – Ivanka Trump.
